It’s My Turn to be Tickled Pink 😉

I would like to thank Carla of Creatin’ in the Sticks, for both hosting this month’s hop and for coming up with such a fun theme for the hop.

The Challenge:
Create something with the color pink in it somewhere. It’s all about pink or being tickled (if you want) LOLIt’s the month of love so really anything will do that tickles us pink. The theme is really your own interpretation, surprise us!

I had a couple of different ideas for projects for the hop, so I pulled some fabrics from the scrap bin, my scrap savers system and my fat quarter drawers. Once I had my fabrics pressed the fun began.

My goal for this project was to use this piece of fabric which was just a bit larger than a fat quarter. I loved the colours and the fabric design reminded me of Baptist Fans.

I need a new topper for the little table which sits between my chair and DH’s. I had an idea for my design so I double checked the size of the tabletop and got out my paper and pencil to draft my idea. It took a few tries to get it right. Quilt Math is hard some days. 😉

I raided my scrap box for 2” squares in the right colours. I needed enough to make 10 4-patches. Half of the squares had to be white and the rest needed to be pink, green or a coordinating print. The 4-patches were quickly assembled thanks to chain piecing methods.

Once I had the 4 patches made (with seams spun) I put two together face to face, matching and pinning the seams on the 4 patches to ensure nice points. I then sewed all around the edges using a 1/4” seam.

Then I cut the blocks from corner to corner on both diagonals.

Once these were pressed and squared up to remove the dog ears, I finished up with some cute little 2” 4 patches.

I added some sashing strips to my centre piece of fabric and then pieced my little hour glass blocks in to my border strips with white on each side.

It didn’t take long to sandwich it, quilt it with some straight line quilting and get the binding done (machine stitched to the front and hand stitched on the back).

I still had some pink bits of fabric in my scrap bin (Surprise, surprise!) so I decided to keep playing.

I knew I needed some Hst’s so I did a batch of Magic 8 hst’s with several different fabrics. There are several tutorials online for making hst’s this way. I just remembered that if you want finished 5” square hst’s you take the ( 5” x 2 ) + 1 = 11” square, so that is the size I cut my squares of fabric and faced them right sides together. I drew my lines on both diagonals, and horizontally and vertically. I stitched 1/4” on each sides of the diagonal lines. Then cut on the lines I had drawn. Voila 8 perfect hst’s which were ready to be pressed and squared up.

I had fun switching the hst’s around and back and forth to get the pattern I wanted and added in some 5” squares from my scrap bin.

I had wanted to have a heart within the heart. Green is the colour of new beginnings. For me this little heart wall hanging symbolizes the fact that with Omicron numbers coming down we might be at a new beginning again. It is also a colour of healing so perhaps the division in our country might start healing.

This little wall hanging finished at 18 1/2” square. It was made mainly from pieces from my scrap bins. I finished layering this and then decided that quilting would be a fun exercise playing with the embroidery stitches on my machine and some different coloured Aurifil and Sulky threads. I put folded squares in the upper corners on the back to allow for hanging. The binding came from leftovers in my little binding stash.

So these two projects are good examples of how anyone can make a project without having a pattern. I do hope it inspires some of you to try your own hand at impromptu designing to use up those bits or even leftover blocks.

  1. Love your table runner! I think I had some of that fabric in my scrap bin at one time! It’s such pretty fabric! And the heart wall hanging is great! Love how you just “improv” designed both of the pieces! Perfect! 🙂
