I have done the SAHRR the past two years, but sadly the flimsies are still unquilted.

I am determined to finish this year’s SAHRR so I started with a 6 1/2” block this year. Once I added my spool border it is now my little quilt is 9 1/2” x 12”.

The funny thing about this particular block is that the spool block is not my favourite block to do. When I first started quilting with a great group of women teaching me all about rotary cutters and 1/4” seams (all the important things you know 😉) I went to a quilt retreat in Barkerville, BC. The retreat was hosted by a woman I admire greatly, who taught me so much and fostered my love of fabric. The pattern for the retreat was Barkerville Spools. You guessed it! I had to make 567 – 4” finished spools. Kathy’s pattern had 15 pieces in each block. I never did make the quilt top, but I did put spool borders on so many of my quilts off and on for 6 or 7 years. 😉. I did the math 3 times to make my spool border and only had to recut 2 pieces of fabric on this one so I’m calling it a win! 😃
I have recently been thinking of revisiting the pattern and thought I might consider giving it a try once I finish the other two classic patterns I’m working on (Dresden’s and Double Wedding Ring). The older patterns seem to be attracting my interest these days. Must be a bucket list thing! 😉
Thank you for stopping by. I do enjoy our visits and love getting to respond to your comments. 😃 Carol

Oh that’s clever! I went with 3″ blocks, probably not wise for a short stitching week. Still it’s been a lot of fun.

Thanks Kate. I love your 3” blocks but just don’t have it in me to make that many myself. 😃

Thank you Wendy. I’m sure you understand why I chose to only do one for this border 😉

CAROL!! This was an ingenious idea! What a great way to only make ONE spool block. What a way to get introduced into quilting by having to make 567 of the same block. I have to confess that I probably would have skipped this round. Happy Friday to you and great job. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Roseanne. I had to think about this round and was happy that I only had to do the math for one block. Wasn’t my intro to quilting crazy? 😉

Carol you are SO smart! I would never have thought to do this. I am struggling with how to incorporate spools (not my fave) on mine, I might have to steal your idea. 😉
