Gnome For Thanksgiving Day 1 – My Turn!

I’m guessing it isn’t hard to think what the challenge was for this hop! Thank you Joan from Moosestash Quilting for not only hosting this fun hop, but for the years and work you have given to our community hosting these hops.

Here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October (our northern climate might have something to do with it 😉) so I decided to put my own spin on it.

I started by pulling a fun little pattern that I’ve been wanting to make.

It didn’t take long to pull fabrics, do some cutting and stabilizing.

Before I knew it I had the rough outlines done, got it sandwiched and was ready to have some fun. 😉

Then it was time to add my embellishments.

I fused the Gnomes to the quilt sandwich, added a label and hanging sleeve to the back and dug in my tin can for a piece of scrappy, fun binding I knew I had.

But wait, perhaps I should explain in case you don’t know. My DH is the Grinchiest Grinch I have ever met (and yes it does get worse as the years go by). So you guessed it; no Easter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Halloween or Christmas decorations for me. 🥹

I have always been into decorating for the holidays. One Halloween I filled my house with dry leaves, and even had a wooden coffin (complete with a living corpse) and made a Haunted House. Kids had to come in to get their goodies and even the adults had to trick or treat.

When we lived up north I had a community park next to my store. I put over 5000 lights up and had a musical light show, inflatables and almost every type of decoration you could imagine. My (ex) husband was Father Christmas and I got to ride along in the sleigh.🤶🏻

One of my friends was an amazing seamstress/tailor and we had fun designing the costumes and then bless her, she made them from real velvet from her stash. Definitely worth every single penny!

So I’m sure you can guess how much I miss decorating (I had 17 large totes of decorations that went to my kids when I moved here) so I have to sneak it in where I can! 🤶🏻

This will be my new favourite not a holiday decoration. It’s going to be my not a Christmas tree wall hanging and has my ultimate favourite thing Gnomes!

Last year before life got crazy I had started my RSC Challenge by making Gnome Blocks. Yes, you guessed right. I stopped in March, but will get back to them soon. 😉. I had bought the Gnome die from Accuquilt and it makes doing these little guys so much fun!

I was having fun doing hand stitching on these little beauties.

This year we might manage to get away across the border to visit DH’s SIL and her husband for American Thanksgiving. It always amazes me when we do to see how they celebrate with dinner for 40 or more of their family and closest friends; so much fun and so much yummy food. L. is so thoughtful and usually manages to smuggle in some onions and garlic in a lot of the dishes so I can indulge, since DH is allergic and I dare not eat or cook them at home. She makes him separate meals so he won’t be “poisoned” as he puts it. 😉

For me every holiday is special and if I can sneak in some decorating I’m extra happy.

Now I can share my finished Gnome for Thanksgiving/Not A Christmas Wall Hanging.

I did get out my fabric pens to add a bit more colour to the Gnome’s noses and now that I’ve had time to enjoy it hanging on the door by my sewing corner, I’ve decided I need to do more quilting and I’m thinking maybe some beads or sparkly thread embroidery on the tree? It will have to wait until February, or March, or even April until I can get my eye surgery and see to thread a needle. For now I’m having to do my binding by machine mostly since I can’t see to thread a needle and DH looked at me as if I’m crazy when I asked him If he could (he’s waiting for cataract surgery). So I’m just going to enjoy this the way it is right now.

  1. That is a cute quilt with the gnomes and the large tree. You can use it for Thanksgiving and Christmas too, even though it’s not Christmas as you said, but just leave it up until next year and extend your Thanksgiving celebration, lol!!

  3. Oh my goodness I love your not Christmas or any holiday theme Gnome tree. They sure are cute under that tree. Those Gnome quilt blocks are adorable. What a fun way to add in applique and we know how much I love applique. I hope you get across the border and get those onions and garlic you have been missing. It’s the little things in life some days isn’t it. LOL!!

    1. Thank you Joan for another fun hop. I’ll miss you. That die from Accuquilt has quickly become a favourite. Don’t think we will manage the visit. DH says he’s not up to it, but we will do a video call and at least get to see the fun and festivities 🤗

  4. Very fun, very cute wall hanging. I’m also married to someone who isn’t into having lots of decorations, but he does want a tree put up for Christmas. So I at least get to decorate that. Hope you get to enjoy Thanksgiving with DH’s family. Sounds like a lot of fun.

  5. What a wonderful idea. Gnomes under the tree isn;t exactly seasonal. Gnomes are in gardens and under bushes all over the country all year long, So they’re cute but just standard wall hanging. Hows that for a justification. I love them no matter what.

  7. Love your wallhanging and gnome blocks. I decorate for Fall, then Halloween, then take the Halloween down and have Thanksgiving decorations that stay until the day after when I get out the Christmas decorations.

    1. Karrin you sound like my best friend; Easter becomes Spring. Then Summer comes out. Then Fall and Halloween. Christmas starts going up Nov.1 and that becomes winter. In between a few other decorations show up (St Paddy’s Day, etc). I get to enjoy the seasons and holidays vicariously through her. 🤗

  9. The tree with gnomes is just the cutest thing, Carol! I love it! It’s good that you get to slip some holiday fun into your life. It sounds like you’d have a great time with family for Thanksgiving, so I hope you get to go. Happy Thanksgiving!

  10. That’s definitely not a Christmas wall hanging; enjoy displaying it in your home! I decorate for winter, spring, summer, and fall (including Halloween and Thanksgiving), but I go totally overboard with decorations at Christmas time. My DH complains about helping bring the totes out of the attic, but always compliments the decor when I’ve finished. Enjoy your holidays!
