Scrap Fabric Fun Blog Hop

Mel from The Quilting Room With Mel is hosting a fun hop that shows us great new ways or projects to use up our scraps. Any quilter has scraps and using those leftover bits can bring a warmth of the memories of past quilts and projects.

For my project I had a pile of leftover bricks (those pieces of cut in half charm squares) some of which had been gifted to me by Denise, and stones (2 1/2” squares).

The simplest way to use them up was to take the piles of each and sew them together (one of each).

I then started sewing them in sets, alternating the hst’s from one side to the other.

Then those sets were sewn in to blocks of 4 which measured out to 8 1/2” x 7 1/4”.

The blocks were then sewn into 8 strips. I decided on using some leftover yardage from another project to make 2 1/2” sashing strips and an outside border.

“Two Sided Zippers”68” x 74” finished size.

This was one of those mindless sewing/leader-ender projects that was a finished flimsy before I knew it. Once it was together I thought of those lovely two sided zippers that you use for parkas.

Once again, however, this flimsy along with backing and a scrappy binding are folded up and stored in a TBQ bin patiently waiting it’s turn to be finished on the longarm. After having one of my great granddaughter pass away at the age of 2 unexpectedly, I’m not up to doing any quilting right now. Instead this top will be donated to Quilts For Survivors as part of my H2H donations.

Thank you Mel for hosting such a fun, inspiring hop and thank you for stopping by to read my post. Hope this tutorial helps you clean up some of your scrap abundance. 😉 Carol

I have been fondling fabric and creating things with fabric and fiber for as long as I can remember. My children had homemade clothes, blankets, canning and quilts most of their lives. Now I create goodies to share! Hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoy making them! When I am not creating with fiber or fabric I keep busy with Dear Heart, kids, grandkids, great grandkids.

  1. Hi Carol! I hope some of that mindless sewing helped ease the sadness for a bit. I’ll bet you had some nice memories of past sewing projects in those scraps. That sounds like it was a great QAL! {{Hugs}} a bunch for you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. So nice to see you immerse yourself in the balm that is sewing. It always works for me. And what a great way to use up scraps. I like that idea of the borders throughout. Take care now Carole!
