PQ 13.6 Flying Geese

This was the prompt we received for the sixth and final challenge this week from Trish (aka Quilt Chicken):

“We have not truly done a block challenge this year yet, so today’s the day. This time, I want you to incorporate some pieced flying goose elements into your project. I don’t care how many you use – but I am setting a bare minimum at 5.”

I can’t believe we are at the last challenge but it is mid March so it is that time.

In spite of life interfering with my quilting mojo, it did give me the idea for my project. I was thinking of the trip to attend Clarke’s Memorial Service and realized I needed a new toiletries bag that is tall enough to hold my toothbrush. It’s been so long since I travelled other than going to the studio, I needed to start thinking of what all I would need to take with me.

So I pulled out my scrap bin and got to work needing the variety of scraps, polka dots, patterns, florals and a rainbow of colours.

I made 6 larger flying geese with polka dot bodies and different coloured wings on each goose, added floral fabric borders for the top and bottom portions of my bag to get it to the exact size I needed. My geese are flying around my bag. I had the right sized zipper in my stash so it was easy to make the bag outer layer, the lining and get the sandwiching done with some fusible fleece.

I really had fun playing with the quilting, doing some STD, and matchstick quilting. Before I finished the side seams I added an electric loop to hold my toothbrush case upright and inserted a pocket on one side to hold the charger. The other side has a pocket as well to hold any smaller items to keep everything neat. The case folds flat and is tucked in my suitcase now just waiting until it is time to travel.

Once again I need to thank Trish (aka QUILTchicken) and Kim of Persimmon Dreams for keeping us on our toes with such fun challenges to make a quilt/project in a week! This year I managed to finish 5 of the 6 challenges. Next year I might even get all of them unless real life gets in the way again.

Thank you for stopping by to read my post. 😄 Carol

I have been fondling fabric and creating things with fabric and fiber for as long as I can remember. My children had homemade clothes, blankets, canning and quilts most of their lives. Now I create goodies to share! Hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoy making them! When I am not creating with fiber or fabric I keep busy with Dear Heart, kids, grandkids, great grandkids.

  1. Hi Carol! What a useful and cute way to meet the challenge. I was originally thinking that was one tall toothbrush, but when you mentioned the charger it all made sense. HAHA! You had me at polka dots – that’s always a great choice in my book. I’ve met a dot I didn’t like. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
