My Day on In the Kitchen Stitchin’ Blog Hop

I’d like to start by thanking Carla from Creatin’ in the Sticks for organizing another fun hop for all of to enjoy, whether it is gathering new bits of inspiration or creating something to share. I know I’ve had a few squirrels tempting me with all the posts I’ve been reading!

I was going to make a new cover for my Kitchenaid Mixer but then thought of my daughter, granddaughter and great grandkids having just moved in to a new place and the video tour my daughter had taken me on to show me the new place. The ideas started forming and I went searching my stash for fabrics and some cutting and stitching commenced.

There is the perfect spot on the side of a cupboard right by the stove that needed a bit of bright colour and new tool caddy is always handy. 😉

And here you have it:

A pretty new utensil holder for my daughter and granddaughter’s new place!

I don’t have a pattern to share since I was just winging it. My first consideration was the width of the side of the cupboard I was making this for (14”). I wanted the dowel to sit inside the edges of the cupboard. Then I cut my backing fabric 12” wide, sandwiched it and then quilted it with some straight line quilting following the stripes in the fabric. Then I started making my two pockets. I calculated where I wanted them and then doubled the measurement. I folded one end of each pocket twice to make a 1/2” fold and top stitched it. The other end was finished with single fold fabric from the same fabric as the backing to make a nice finished binding edge. The pockets were then folded in half and pinned in place. The back pocket goes right to the bottom of the holder and the other two pockets are offset to have different depths. in all there are 4 pockets of various depths.

Then I thought of the mountain of dishes and pots and pans they have every day with two kids in the house and plenty of family in their bubble, and decided they needed a couple of dish mats as well since I still had more of the pretty border print fabric and some blue to use up. I also had a huge bath towel that was still great but a bit tired along the edges. It worked well with my continued goal for the year, working from my stash and up cycling things. 😉

The parcel was mailed and should be arriving any day now to surprise my girls. 😉

  4. Oh! This is such a clever idea! And so handy to hold the variety of utensils needed for baking and cooking. Way better than digging through a drawer full of every kind of utensil. Your daughter’s family should love this. And the dish drying mats to match are always a helpful kitchen item. Especially if there is a lot of kitchen action happening.

    1. Hi Ann. There are often 8 kids and several adults there for meals so they get action. My daughter did like it. Now my grandson’s partner wants one to hold her measuring cups, measuring spoon, whisks, etc 😊

    1. Hi Vicki. I confess that’s where I got the idea from. I had made several for our trailer (kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) years ago and when my daughter mentioned lack of drawer space I thought it might work. 😊

  8. This is a great idea for keeping those regularly used tools close by and looking beautiful, too. I love the way you upcycled the towel into the mats! Thank you for sharing wonderful ways to make kitchen projects!

    1. Hi Wendy. The parcel arrived and yes they do like it. Now my granddaughter wants one for her makeup in the bathroom. My daughter wants a toilet paper holder for her bathroom. My grandsons partner wants one for her measuring cups and spoons. They all sent requests for different sized dish mats 🥴
